Directory Open Access Journal

Dear SMED Family,
As you navigate your literature reviews and begin considering venues for your own scholarly work, I want to introduce you to a vital tool: the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).As many of you know, I have been deeply involved with the Open Access movement for many years. Having contributed to the growth of this movement, I’ve seen firsthand how it has transformed the landscape of research—moving us away from restrictive paywalls toward a more equitable, global exchange of knowledge. The DOAJ is a community-curated online directory that indexes high-quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals. It is much more than just a search engine; it serves as a "seal of approval" for open-access publishing.

Why you should use it for your Literature Review:

  • Quality Assurance: Every journal in the DOAJ has been vetted to ensure it follows thePrinciples of Transparency and Best Practice.
  • No Paywalls: Every article indexed is free to read and download without delay or embargo.
  • Diverse Scope: It covers all subject areas and many languages, helping you find global perspectives that might be missed in traditional subscription databases.

Why it matters for your Publishing Career:

As you look for a home for your first manuscripts, the DOAJ helps you identify reputable journals and avoid "predatory" publishers. To be listed, a journal must meet strict criteria, including:
  • Rigorous Peer Review: A minimum of two independent reviewers.
  • Clear Licensing: Specific information on Creative Commons licensingand author copyright.
  • Transparency on Fees: Journals must clearly state any Author Processing Charges (APCs) or explicitly state if they charge nothing at all.

Pro-Tip for Generative AI:

If you are using AI tools in your research, note that many DOAJ-indexed journals now follow COPE guidelines, which require authors to disclose the use of generative AI. Remember: AI cannot be credited as an author or cited as a primary source.I encourage you to spend some time exploring the DOAJ Search toolthis week to see what open-access journals are leading the conversation in your specific field. My goal in contributing to this movement has always been to empower researchers like you to share your work without barriers.

Put Knowledge into Motion: Your DOAJ Challenge

Now it’s your turn to step into the world of open research. I’ve spent much of my career advocating for a world where your access to information isn’t determined by the size of your institution's budget—and the DOAJ is the crown jewel of that effort.I am inviting each of you to take 15 minutes today to explore the directory:
  1. Visit the DOAJ Search Portal.
  2. Filter by "Articles" and enter keywords specific to your current research interests or thesis topic.
  3. Find one high-quality, peer-reviewed paper that you haven’t seen in our library databases yet.
  4. Check the Journal’s Profile: Look for the "DOAJ Seal" or their specific peer-review policy to see the standards I’ve discussed.
Why do this? Literature reviews are often limited by what is "available" to us. By using the DOAJ, you are expanding your scholarly horizons to include global, gold-standard research that is free from paywalls.Tell me what you find: I’d love to hear about the most interesting open-access article you discover. If you find a journal that perfectly aligns with your work, keep it on your "shortlist" for future publication!"Knowledge is only powerful when it is accessible. Go find yours."
